"Tutejšyja" (Locals) on the Vilnius stage

The Hrodna Locals tour came to be a rare event to bring together so many different Belarusians in Vilnius: from the Belarusian embassy workers and to exiled pro-opposition youth activists. The performance of the legendary Belarusian tragicomedy was organised by efforts of JuBIC, the Belarusian Skaryna school in Vilnius and the Vilnius theatre "Lėlė".   The event co-organiser Vadzim Vileita of JuBIC shared his thoughts: "Perhaps it happened so because Tutejšyja seemingly very political managed always to stay above the politics. They united all Belarusians, encompassing something impossible to catch, which is, probably, a Belarusian national idea. And also they managed to intertwine it with the international context. In the Hrodna puppet theatre performance this side of Tutejšyja was underlined the most."   The Vilnius tour would help artists from Hrodna (Belarus) to further develop their cooperation with colleagues in Lithuania and the EU. Guests from Kaunas and Panevėžys puppet theatres were present at the showing. They expressed interest to continue their introduction with Hrodna'ers. Facilitating contacts of this kind between the two countries is an example of what JuBIC sees as its main mission. The only thing 'not-local' spectators were upset about was the fact that Locals was shown in Belarusian without translation to Lithuanian. But the most acknowledged that when the words were not always understood, then an excellent artists' play would save the day.
